How To Heal Children’s Pain Correctly

A friend of my daughter has to take eight pills a day, as instructed by her mother. She is perfectly healthy and her mother still gives her sleeping pills every night. There was an occasion when she came over to my house for a sleepover with other kids. I was asked to give her her pills at 8:30 p.m. when she was having such great time with the others. The effects of the pills didn’t come until five hours after the other girls fell asleep.

Parents’ education is the first important part for medication consumption of kids.

There are many cases of kids getting poisoned, some of the cases led to death of the kids, most of the cases could actually be prevented. It is not proper for us to give pills to kids whenever they feel uncomfortable, this is not a good education.

When a child experiences pain, love and acknowledgment from parents are needed instead of pills. For instance, a child slips somewhere far away from his house. He feels pain and cries furiously. Then he start to return to his house and stops crying gradually on his way home. However, he cries again when he is back home and sees his parents. You may think he is pretending but actually he is not. He restarts crying just because his pain is acknowledged by his parents. What he needs are his parents’ care and understanding of the pain he experienced.

Babies and children, similar to adults, can only concentrate on one thought consciously at a time. You must have noticed that babies always focus on one point such as their own hands or a fan. They pay full attention while staring at that particular object. If we can make use of this power by shifting their focuses to some positive thoughts and actions, their wounds can be healed much faster.

When we were kids, our mothers would kiss us to get us away from the painful feeling, this is a good way to heal pain.

What can we do to help the kids when they are having chronic pain or receiving painful treatments, like bone marrow transplant or chemotherapy?

Last night I watched the film ‘Patch Adams’. The physician in the film shows great courage when going against the establishment. I was touched. If I am in his position, I cannot do better than him, I would not be able to tell jokes to a patient in his last moment. There are critics saying that the movie is too much in Hollywood style and that this older man got the beautiful girl is not credible. I quite agree with these but these are not what the movie was to talk about.
